Well, while I'm here and getting started and all that jazz, this is my first translation. *hides head*.

蜷局 / toguro / coil
作詞:京
作曲: Dir en grey
translation by deidrich

"Hold your tongue" (1)
"White silence"
"Words swell up"
"Desperation creeps closer" (2)

Seductive decay holds to a clinging smile
The blurry night has split open

“Scars covering scars”
“Darkness, doubt, human nature”
“Thirst for each other like mad”

The striking roar of the vagrant beggar

Smiling as you pick the butterfly-petaled wings
Cast off that sense of superiority (3)
Scatter in repose
Broken by the spur? Come on, mount it (4)
Close your eyes to what is real
Lost, forlorn, roaming aimlessly
FAREWELL, humanity
Without a sound

The striking roar of the survivor

Swarming the sought-out facade, itemised destruction
Reality, gratification, and the nothingness pry open a wound
Trace the answer with your fingers
Dancing Slowly Forever Sick
Choke

This song is so obscure! It’s like a mixture of moods, images and scenes all blended together, rather than a cohesive story, so I found it quite challenging to translate.

Honestly, this is one of my favourite songs of all time. No words can describe my enduring reaction to this song and it’s wonderful beauty.

1: ‘舌を殺す’ literally reads as ‘kill the tongue’. However I was immediately reminded of the phrase ‘息を殺し’, which means ‘to hold ones breath, to catch ones breath’, although literally reading as ‘kill the breath’. I opted to translate 舌を殺す as such because I far prefer how it flows into the rest of the opening verse. I think it also greatly enhances the imagery for the english reader.

2: 切望. setsubō’ is such a beautiful, beautiful word. Depending on the context, it can mean any of the following: longing for, earnest desire, desperate desire, yearning, hankering, hope, anxiety, tension’; Kyo (typically) doesn’t provide us with the context he is using the word in so we are left to interpret. After thinking about it I wanted to use a word that could… kind of, in a way, encompass or allude to all of the above readings. Desperation I felt was best suited.

3: 切り付ける means to ‘to cut at; to slash at’, I’ve interpreted that as to slash at as in to slash away at, to shed etc.

4: Spur, as in, stimulus, impetus, drive, catalyst, provocation etc. Not an actual riding spur. :P
